Electron Microscopical Studies on the Epithelium of the Rat Epididymis After Ligation of Vas Deferens

Abstract
To investigate the effects of the epididymal obstruction on the canal epithelium ,of the rat epididymis, histological and electron miscroscopical studies were made on the epithelium of the tail portion of the rat epididymis at one, two, three and six months after the ligation of vas deferens. Results obtained are summerized as follows.
1. Sizes and weights of the testis, and epididymis of the control and ligated groups were compared at the one month and two months after ligation of vas deferens. Most of th. ligated groups showed considerable reduction of testicular weights comparing with the control group.
2. At the light microscopic level, no detectable changes were found .in the canal epithelium of the obstructed epididymis.
3. Electron microscopy revealed that principal cells of ligated group had many microvilli in the luminal surface, many round mitochondria, extensive Golgi apparatus associated often multivesicular bodies, dense. bodies of various internal structures, well developed endoplasmic reticulum and a few vacuoles. Light ¢¥cells contained many vesicles and vacuoles, rod shaped mitochondria and many dense bodies with various internal densities and contents.
From these results, it may be concluded that ligation of vas deferens of the rat results considerable testicular atrophy but does not have any detectable histological and electron microscopical changes in the epithelial cells of the tail portion of the rat epididymis. Considerable reduction of testicular weight .suggests inhibition of sperm production in the testis and the sperm already produced being absorbed somewhere in the germinal tracts.
